Why Study International Primary English as an Additional Language?

The International Primary English as an Additional Language course empowers even the youngest learners to communicate confidently and effectively. It helps them to develop the skills needed to respond to a range of information, media and texts. This course develops learners’ curiosity about other languages and cultures, and how these shape our perceptions of the world. They will see themselves as successful language learners, be able to communicate effectively and become confident in and enjoy reading a range of texts as their skills develop in:

Prior requirements and hours of study

This subject is for learners who speak a language other than English at home – there is no expectation that they will have prior experience of English before starting this course.

It requires 4 – 5 hours per week of study time for your child to complete Year 3, 4, 5 or 6.

Why Study International IGCSE English as an Additional Language?

International IGCSE English as an Additional Language is designed for learners who already have working knowledge of the language and who want to consolidate their understanding in order to progress in their academic or professional career. You will be presented with a variety of stimuli that will build up your skills in reading and writing.

You will learn to select relevant details, understand the difference between what is directly stated and implied, and practise writing for different purposes and audiences.

You will listen to a range of spoken material, including talks and conversation, in order to develop listening skills. You will engage in conversations on a variety of topics, and develop your skills in responding to different situations and audiences with a degree of accuracy and clarity. Prior requirements and hours of study

International IGCSE English as an Additional Language requires about 130 hours of study. The number of hours needed may vary depending on your previous experience of the subject.

We recommend that students who are beginning this course are not first language speakers of English, but students who use English as a lingua franca or language of study. Learners are likely to have studied a curriculum such as International Lower Secondary programme within the National Curriculum for England.
