Why Study International GCSE Literature in English?

International GCSE Literature in English course enables you to read, interpret and evaluate texts through the study of literature in English. You will develop an understanding of literal meaning, relevant contexts and of the deeper themes or attitudes that may be expressed. Through your studies, you will learn to recognise and appreciate the ways in which writers use English to achieve a range of effects, and will be able to present an informed, personal response to the material you have studied.

Prior requirements and hours of study

International GCSE Literature in English requires about 130 hours of study. The number of hours needed may vary depending on your previous experience of the subject.

We recommend that students who are beginning this course should have previously completed an English Language curriculum such as the International Lower Secondary programme or equivalent national educational framework.

Why Study International AS & A Level English Literature?

You will study a range of texts in the three main forms: prose, poetry and drama. Set texts are offered from a wide range of different periods and cultures. You will develop skills of reading and analysis of texts, and will be encouraged to undertake wider reading to aid understanding of the texts studied. You will learn skills of effective and appropriate communication including the ability to discuss the critical context of texts. (Cambridge Assessment International Education, n.d.)

Prior requirements and hours of study

International AS Level English Literature requires about 180 hours of study, and International A Level English Literature requires about 360 hours of study. These figures are for guidance only. The number of hours needed may vary depending on your previous experience of the subject.

We recommend that students who are beginning this course should have previously completed an International GCSE course in English Literature.

Grade B/6 or above in English Literature at IGCSE (or equivalent) is required before starting International AS & A English Literature.
